Which Cookware Should You Choose?

Posted by admin in September 3rd 2010

If you are looking for new cookware for your household use, there are many types available and in many different price ranges. You can buy individual pieces or a complete cookware set for your specific needs. Choosing a cookware set usually saves you money and a set ensures that all the pieces you have will match in quality, appearance and use. But which cookware set should you choose? Read these cookware set reviews to see which may be best suited to your needs:

Calphalon Cookware

The Calphalon cookware is created from a process invented by NASA to create anodized aluminum cookware, which has the advantage of being very hard and smooth, naturally resistant to corrosion, and being non-stick as well. The first cookware products were created for professional chefs, but later the Calphalon products were brought to the consumer market.

Calphalon has a couple of different cookware product lines. The Calphalon One Infused cookware combines the hard anodized aluminum material with a non-stick surface to produce extremely durable pots and pans. They are safe to use on the stove, in the oven or under the broiler, and you can even use metallic utensils with them. As a note, the Calphalon One also comes in a standard non-stick version.

The simply Calphalon Stainless product line is designed for home cooks on a budget. This line is made of 18/10 stainless steel and is easy to use and maintain. There is also the Calphalon Everyday cookware that is still very durable, with a non-stick surface. With both of these product lines, it is recommended that you do not use metal utensils with them, or use them under a broiler.

The Calphalon cookware pans heat very quickly, so it is recommended to heat and cook on low to medium heat only to avoid food overcooking and burning. This line of cookware is contemporary in design, easy to clean, and varying-sized sets include frying pans, omelet pans, saucepans, saute pans and stockpots. Prices range from about $200 up to approximately $700.

Le Crueset Cookware

The Le Crueset cookware company in France has been making cookware for over 80 years. This cookware is made from enameled cast iron. After the cast iron has been molded and enameled, much of the finishing on the cookware is done by hand so each Le Crueset Cast Iron piece is completely unique. In several publications, Le Crueset cookware has been rated as the best enameled cast iron cookware on the market today.

The cookware has a heavy cast iron core which is consistent in quality and thickness up the side walls and in the lids. This creates great heat conductivity and allows the food within it to remain hot for a considerable length of time when you take it to the table. It is reputed to be able to withstand high temperatures without warping, and can be used on the stove top, in the oven or for broiler cooking.

The downside to Le Crueset cookware is that it is considered to be a bit on the expensive side, but most considered the cookware to be worth the price. A 5 ½” Round French Oven is about $249 and a 7 ¼” Round Enameled Cast Iron Dutch Over is approx. $328.

Le Crueset also makes a stainless steel non-stick set of cookware that starts at about $428 for an 8 piece set. Superior heat conduction is ensured with these 3-ply stainless steel cookware pieces with a pure aluminum core. The pans heat quickly and food cooks evenly, and they are ergonomically designed for comfort.

Farberware Advantage Cookware

The name of Farberware has been long known for its classic stainless steel cookware. Farberware has now introduced the Advantage line of cookware which is constructed from quality 18/10 brushed stainless steel with a number of special features. The pans have a thick disk base with an inner core of dense aluminum sandwiched between layers of stainless steel that create even heat distribution for ease in cooking. The pans are designed for easier pouring, and the flared design works with Epicurean style lids to create a reduction chamber that locks in food flavors as it cooks.

The long stainless steel handles on the pans are riveted in place and are open at the ends to assure minimal heat transfer so they stay cool to the touch throughout cooking. The Farberware cookware is oven and broiler safe, up to 500° F and is also dishwasher safe for easy cleaning. It is suitable to use on all stove types, including solid burner plates, ceramic, gas, electric, halogen and induction. The Farberware Cookware can be obtained at quite reasonable prices. A 12 piece set can cost about $130.

All-Clad Cookware

All-Clad cookware is reputed to be one of the more popular brands of cookware on the market today, but it is considered quite pricey with a single frying pan over a hundred dollars. But All-Clad is mostly considered to be worth the price, being created from cutting edge technology which pioneered the process of bonding metals together to enhance the benefits of each, while minimizing the drawbacks. The result is adequate heat conduction is maintained ensuring that food cooks evenly.

All-Clad has extremely high standards and good quality construction. Each stage of the manufacturing process is hand inspected to ensure quality. This is sleek, contemporary cookware with flowing lines and attention paid to every detail. It is a quality product good for the home cook or professional chef.

All-Clad offers a few different product lines for you to choose from. All-Clad Stainless is one of the original products which boasts an aluminum core for faster, more even heating. The Master Chef 2 line is crafted after the original design but re-imaged with the input from professional chefs. It boasts a brushed aluminum exterior lined with non-reactive stainless steel in a contemporary style.

The Copper Core All-Clad line blends stainless steel with a copper core for those who want the precision of copper cooking with the fuss and hassle. It is easy to clean and use. There is also the All-Clad LTD cookware set that features layers of anodized steel, aluminum and stainless style for excellent heat conductivity. It has a gleaming black exterior for an impressive appearance. The Cop R Chef is cookware designed for the professional chef.

When using All-Clad cookware, you should avoid using high heats which could burn or tarnish the exterior, and unless it states otherwise, this cookware should not be placed in a dishwasher.

Anolon Titanium Cookware

There are many advantages to using titanium cookware. It is reputed to be healthier because you use less oil while cooking. The pans are supposed to be truly non-stick so you don’t need to use oil or water to cook your food, and which makes it easy to clean. Titanium cookware is very light, weighing less than other pots and pans which still retaining the strength needed for a solid piece. It also is very durable and lasts literally forever, and it resists dents and scratches. This type of cookware also heats quickly which reduces cooking times, but as a downside, titanium can be prone to ‘hot spots’ which if not watched can cause food to burn.

Anolon provides a set of titanium cookware that is fairly reasonably priced at about $270 for a 10 piece set. This cookware is composed of heavy-gauge hand-anodized aluminum coated with titanium composite that is non-porous and easy to clean.

Whichever cookware set you decide to choose, you will be assured of many years of use. Of course, price may be an issue, but buying the best quality cookware that you can afford will offer you years of cooking joy.

Bringing a Bit of Sunshine Into Recession Cooking

Posted by admin in September 2nd 2010

Recession or depression, whatever word you decide to use – it can be daunting to realize that you depended on a whole lot of “quick” foods that may have added dollars to your food budget, but things were better and jobs were not disappearing like snow on a sunlit day. It has happened, and it may continue to happen, but you still have to eat and serve meals to your family or keep yourself nourished if you live alone. It is a matter of economy because medical costs are going through the roof and today it is much cheaper to stay healthy.

Many people are looking to “gardening” as a way to get fresh, and nourishing food with a little bit of elbow grease. Fruits, vegetables and herbs taste “oh so good” when they are just picked and used for dinner. You can’t beat the taste of tomatoes that are still warm from the sun, or a cucumber sweet enough to brighten any salad. Adding home-grown basil to dishes gives you a new taste appeal, and parsley will not only dress up your plate, but it is absolutely fantastic fried for a few moments.

You can have a little bit of fun when you do more cooking and that is “dressing” up your family’s dinnertime entrees. Even breakfast can be “flowery” when you use candy molds (you can get some great ones at yard sales or tag sales) and press softened butter, margarine, or cream cheese into the mold. Refrigerate to harden, and then pop out your flower, leaf, or whatever design you have chosen. Place a lovely yellow daffodil on top of morning toast and believe me when I say a person’s whole day will light up and they will begin their activities with a “sunnier” disposition. It works!

Cherry tomatoes give tomato roses appeal with any meat dish. While all this “creativity” may take a bit more time, you will be the mom who is truly “cool”, the neighbor who is asked to help with party plans because of your inspiration, and well, you will look at the anticipating faces at mealtime and know that the job you are doing is rated E for Excellent.

Using a sharp knife, slowly remove the skin of the cherry tomato, starting at the bottom, not the stem end. Remove the skin in one long piece, which forms the petals of your rose. The peel should be about 1/2″ in width. The “meat” of the tomato should be inside and start to curl your peel from the bottom, forming a very pleasing red bud rose.

When you serve a sandwich, make a dill pickle fan to dress up the meal. Cut the pickle into slices but do not go completely through. Stop about 1/2″ from the end and gently fan out the slices. Using fruit as a garnish, don’t forget that oranges cut in a zigzag mode completely around and through. Gently pull apart and you have two halves of saw-tooth orange beauty to place with a steak or BBQ ribs.

If you serve hot dogs or hamburgers, place the condiments in hollowed out green peppers (use red, yellow, or purple too if they are reasonably priced). Fill these pepper baskets with mustard, ketchup, pickle relish, chopped onions, and tomato salsa. They are colorful and after using, empty the baskets and slice up the peppers. Place in a plastic bag in your refrigerator and use whenever you need some green peppers for fajitas or steak sandwiches. With this one, you win twice.

Taking a cucumber, stripe peel the cucumber (using your vegetable peeler, peel and leave a peel, and peel again and do this completely around your cucumber. Using an ice cream spoon, hollow out the center to remove all the seeds. Using your favorite “filling” such as tuna fish salad, ham salad, etc. spoon the filling into the hollowed out cucumber. Wrap in foil and place in refrigerator for about 30 mins. Just before serving, slice the cucumber into 1/2″ slices and place on a bed of lettuce. This salad is very appealing and quite a “treat” for your appetizer choice.

These are just a few examples of using food to make food more interesting, beautiful, and to give every meal a bit of a festive “design”. Try your hand at other vegetables and you may just discover how artistic you really are.

Something to think about

Hog Roast Catering in Bristol – Where, How and What Sort of Fuel?

Posted by admin in September 1st 2010

Nothing beats a hog roast but in Bristol you may have trouble catering for the feast whilst trying to socialise. Hog roasts are the picture of a feast; Asterix of Gaul’s adventures would always end in a banquet under the stars with his tribe and the tribal element of eating a hog roast has not died. But, whilst Asterix’s tribe had many people who were available to prepare and cook the hog we, in the modern day do not. When planning a hog roast most people get really excited but as soon as they dig a little deeper they get despondent asking questions like where are we going to get a pig, how do we get it home and how long do we have to cook it for?

Well this article is going to try to answer some of those questions. Firstly, in Bristol, there are lots of places to buy a pig. There are many free range and also organic pig farmers which is important when you think that you’re going to eat the beast fairly soon after it has been slaughtered. Intensively farmed swine do not make the best hog roasts. So, one of the closest places to buy a hog is Barrow Gurney, south of Bristol; they not only supply great quality pork but also beef. A small pig farmer will take far more interest in you as he will have a passion for his work and will want to share his knowledge so why not ask him how to roast a hog because although you may have a good idea of how to roast it, he may have a few tips that you hadn’t thought of. You also might like to try going to your local, high street butcher, once again he will have to order it and this may take upwards of a month.

Next, how do you get it home and where do you store it? There will be blood so don’t forget some protective coverings for your car boot and also remember to wear some old clothes. You may want to bring a friend to help carry the hog, as they can be very heavy. As for storing it- it’ll need to be somewhere cool and inside, maybe in a pantry, a larder or in the garage.

You’ve got the beast home and now you have to cook it. Firstly you must decide whether you’re going to use charcoal, wood or gas. Wood is best because it will add a great flavour to the meat but you’ll have to choose the type of wood to use and also make sure that you have enough. Apple or cherry wood is lovely to burn under a hog but almost any wood will be fine except pine and yew as these tend to give an acrid flavour to the meat. Charcoal will also infuse the meat with a lovely flavour and is easier to manage than wood. The easiest of all is to get a fully integrated gas spit roast for you hog. These can be hired and delivered and are fairly controllable. Make sure that when you book it you know how big the hog is going to be as the gas barbeque comes in different sizes and you wouldn’t want a BBQ that’s too small for your hog, or a hog that looks too small on your BBQ.

Now you’re almost ready to get the beast on the pole. The pole should be at least seven feet long and one inch in diameter and should rest on the supports at about two feet above the heat. You also need fixing skewers to stop the pig from slipping as it is rotated. So, lay the pig on a table, stuffed and sown up and pass the pole from the back end of the animal to the mouth. Make sure that there’s an equal amount of pole at both ends. You might like to light the fire about now.

A good stuffing for a hog roast is apricots, nuts, sour cherries and apples mixed with breadcrumbs and sausage meat. Once mixed, stuff the belly of the pig with the stuffing and sew it up using a blanket stitch and baste the beast with an oily vinaigrette (tip- make sure that the stitching is always wet with the baste as otherwise it’ll burn and you’ll lose your stuffing).

Is the fire good and hot, has it been burning for at least an hour? Good, now, with a friend lift the pig on a spit over to the supports either side of the fire or into the gas BBQ and start rotating the beast over the heat. Turn the spit every 5-10 minutes. Now you just have to wait for it to cook- between six and eight hours. Test whether the meat is cooked by inserting a knife into the leg and look for the juices to run clear. If they do, get a couple of friends to help lift the hog off the support and onto a table then all of you together carve and serve up so that all your guests receive hot meat and stuffing. Now that the sun is setting you and your tribe can make like Asterix and his gang at another great banquet.

Hardwood Floor Care Will Keep Your Hardwood Looking Fantastic

Posted by admin in September 1st 2010

Hardwood is still the homeowner’s favorite choice of flooring and caring for it takes minimal effort. Unlike laminate or engineered wood, hardwood can be refinished many times, and will add years of beauty and warmth to your home, as well as increase its value and speed its resale. Ongoing floor care is needed to keep your hardwood looking its best, however, and there are four major aspects of hardwood floor care:

1. Hardwood floor cleaning

2. Hardwood floor repair

3. Hardwood floor refinishing

4. Hardwood floor protection

Clean Your Hardwood Regularly

Knowing how to clean hardwood floors is important because the bane of hardwood is dirt and grit, which will scratch and mark the floor if not removed promptly. As well, dust is seen more easily on wood floors than it is on linoleum or on carpet, especially in the sunlight and especially if the floor has a dark stain. Hardwood floor care, therefore, means sweeping and dusting regularly – once a week, at least, and after any event that leaves dirt and grit behind. Regular household dusting and cleaning products will cause damage, however, and you must use only products specifically designed for hardwood. Vacuuming is preferable to sweeping because it allows the dirt and dust to be pulled from between the boards, but use a vacuum with a bare floor attachment, not a beater bar, which can damage the wood.

When a more in-depth cleaning is required, use a cleaning method appropriate to the finish on your floor. If your floor has a glossy finish, it means that polyurethane, or a water-based urethane, or a similar finish has been used to form a protective barrier over the hardwood. If it has a matte finish, it means that the floor is protected with a penetrating seal of oil and/or wax. On neither of these finishes is water an acceptable cleaning agent, but both of them can accept a surface, damp-mop cleaning, which means the mop is not wet but only damp to the touch. You are cleaning only the surface and not using enough water to penetrate even the oiled-and-waxed hardwood. When using a damp mop on oil and waxed hardwood, you can add a little neutral ph hardwood floor cleaner to the water before dipping the mop into it. A floor with a protective glossy barrier can accept a generic hardwood floor cleaner providing it doesn’t contain any wax or oil.

The don’ts are every bit as important as the do’s in hardwood floor care;

1. Don’t use ammonia, regular floor cleaners, household cleaners, or dusting products on hardwood.

2. Never use wax on a floor with a urethane or other glossy finish.

3. Never wash hardwood; use only a slightly damp mop.

Repair Any Damage to Your Floors as Soon as Possible

In most cases, when your oil and waxed hardwood floors have suffered surface damage, you have to remove the finish with a wax or oil stripper before dealing with the damage. After completing the repair, you then re-wax or re-oil the area. Surface damage occurs less often on hardwood protected by polyurethane or a similar type of sealer, and when it does, the damage is not as obvious. When repairing floors with such finishes, strip the finish from the entire board or boards where the damage has occurred. Make your repairs and then apply a finishing product to those boards that is consistent with the rest of the floor.

1. Water marks: Remove the protective finish, rub the marks with fine grade steel wool. Repeat if necessary, clean, and then refinish.

2. Burn marks: Lightly sand the area, use a damp cloth to pick up the grit, and then refinish as desired.

3. Scratches and gouges: Conceal shallow scratches with matching wood putty or a putty stick. After the area is dry, sand and refinish.

Refinishing Your Worn Hardwood Floors Will Recapture Their Original Beauty and Value

In a home with shabby hardwood floors, the biggest improvement you can make is to refinish the floors. Begin by making any necessary repairs, and then removing all the furniture and drapes and sealing the vents and registers in the room so that you won’t spread dust throughout the house. Sanding floors is easiest to do with a drum sander and an edging machine for the sides and corners of the room. You can rent these machines, and it is a good idea to rent a buffer or floor polisher at the same time. Plan to make three passes with your sanding equipment, using increasingly finer sandpaper each time. Vacuum carefully and pick up every bit of fine dust and grit with tacking cloths. All dust and dirt must be removed. You can now apply a stain if you wish or you can leave the natural color and design of the wood – such as the popular oak, maple, or cherry – to be displayed.

Polish and clean the dust and dirt from the floor again, and then apply your sealer – a polyurethane or a water-based urethane that provides a protective barrier, or oil and wax, which penetrates the wood and protects from within. Carefully read all the information accompanying each product, follow the safety advice, and apply as many coats of stain or sealer as suggested by the manufacturer of the products you are using.

Hardwood Floor Care Means Providing Ongoing Floor Protection

As well as regular cleaning, and repairing and refinishing when necessary, there are a number of protective measures you can take to preserve the beauty of your hardwood:

1. Use area rugs and mats in high traffic areas and sites of frequent spills (e.g., in front of the stove, sink, and refrigerator). Move these rugs frequently so that these areas of the floor remain the same color as the exposed floor. As well, it is best to choose cotton mats as they do not trap water under them as rubber or vinyl might.

2. Keep high-heeled shoes in good repair and avoid using stiletto heels.

3. Keep nails trimmed on pets.

4. Clean up spills immediately with a paper towel or dry cloth. A damp cloth can be used for sticky spills, but dry the spot immediately afterwards with another towel or cloth.

5. Lift rather than drag furniture when moving it and use felt contacts under furniture legs to prevent scratches and gouges.

6. Use sheers or blinds to protect your floors from the discoloration caused by direct sun rays.

With proper care and maintenance, your hardwood floors will retain their beauty and enhance any décor that you choose. When your floors become worn, or if they become damaged, they can be restored to their former glory with a little time, effort, and money. Use the Internet to check out quality products, read the information on how to use them, compare prices, and place your orders. We can help with all your hardwood floor care needs – everything from discount hardwood flooring to hardwood cleaners – and all items can be purchased online and delivered to your door. Let us help you keep your hardwood floors looking their best.

What is a Graphite Electrode and How is it Involved in the Steel Making Process?

Posted by admin in August 31st 2010

All of us must know steel. We use it in your everyday life. But have you ever wondered how to produce it? And what does it take to produce it? Basically the steel is produced in a big factory and it is cooked in a giant stove called furnace. And the cooking itself takes so many ingredients in it.

The Blast Furnace and Electric Arc Furnace methods are the two major techniques for producing iron and steel products. Scrap melting is the major process utilizing Electric Arc Furnaces. Recently, industry competition has become increasingly intense, elevating the need for a much more efficient melting process. Capacities of the transformers are getting larger and electric furnaces are growing larger worldwide. In this manufacturing environment, graphite materials that have durability for larger-power operation are needed much more for the use as Graphite Electrode (GE).

GE are made from carbon. Carbon is a nonmetal element with an atomic number of 6 and the atomic symbol “C”. Carbon is the base of organic chemistry, closely related to organic matter and life activity. Manufacturing excellent graphite electrodes requires quality materials that are strictly selected.

Graphite has a higher heat transfer rating, resistance to higher temperatures, and has more strength against thermal shock than other materials. Moreover, it excels in machinability to meet the requirements for a broader range of dimensions. Thus, graphite is the optimum material for scrap-melting electrodes.

GE are easily consumed at high temperatures due to the reaction with oxygen to become CO, CO2. The oxidation of electrodes starts at 500oC and accelerates its speed at 800oC (inside the furnace). Consumption of graphite electrodes by sublimation occurs at 3400o. The speed of sublimation is proportional to the increase of current density.

Meanwhile, use of quality GE results in contributions to saving energy and environmental conservation. Electric arc furnaces, with the main function of recycling steel scraps, help promote reuse of steel products.

Production organization of graphite electrodes can be divided as 10 stages as follows:

Raw material transporting
Kneading
Extruding
Baking
Pitch Impregnation
Re-Baking
Graphitization
Machining
Inspection
Shipment

The standard sizes for graphite electrodes are from diameter 10″ (inch) to 30″(inch) and from length of 60″(inch) to 110″(inch). The weights are ranging from 123 Kgs (10″ x 60″) to 2060 Kgs (30″ x 110″).

The major producer countries for graphite electrodes are Japan, United States, German, China and India. While the major consumer countries are China, Japan, German, India, United States and Indonesia.

A Portable Power Generator Might Be a Key to Power

Posted by admin in August 29th 2010

The world is taking note: A portable power generator might be one of the best, most affordable energy sources for those in times of crisis. In recent years, even months, Mother Nature has delivered strong blows to households across the nation via variations of wind, rain and ice. Families who have relied on electricity for nearly every need have experienced what it’s like to do without it – and they don’t want to do without again. But since weather is uncontrollable, they must take control of their needs another way – possibly with their own portable generator.

Just like an old friend is on standby when the going gets rough, this generator will be too. And unlike you, it won’t be relying on the electricity. The portable power generator does not depend on electricity as its source like an air conditioner, water heater or electric furnace, but instead is powered by an engine. The engine is supplied with natural gas from your gas line or a liquid propane tank.

Best of all, you don’t have to get out a book in the midst of a power outage and read instructions by candlelight on how to hook it up. You don’t even have to be at home. Your generator is installed with an automatic transfer switch that monitors your power rather than relying on the thermostat to kick it on.

There are many quality options available in generators. Some will be propane powered, others will be diesel electric. Some of the best-reviewed ones are the Honda Portable Quiet Generators. Effective at their job, these Honda models are especially noteworthy because people who use them almost forget they’re there, thakns to the noise-reduction technology.

If there is a down side, it’s the price. If you want the generator to supply power to your entire house, be ready to cough up big bucks – in the neighborhood of $4,000 to $15,000. The alternative is to supply power to specific circuits like the air conditioner or furnace; the stove and refrigerator or freezer, or the water heater. It’s a matter of choosing priorities.

So if money is no object, go for the whole house. If money is a consideration, choose a smaller unit that supplies power to specific circuits also known as an essential circuit system, supplying power to a zone of your house or a specific appliance. The portable power generator is equipped with pre-wired automatic transfer switches, and because your circuit breaker is divided into different circuits, your system will not be overloaded. To determine the size generator you will need and get an idea of the price, you will need to supply the number of circuits you want to power and the size of each circuit (amps/volts). Installation is simple. Just match your circuits in your main electric panel box to the circuits on the generator unit.

Let’s review…no electricity – no worries. Portable power generators will be ready and waiting to take over in an emergency power outage. Nothing to plug in, no tanks to fill, no dangerous flames to ignite. Choose whole house or specific areas or appliances. It may even be more reliable than an old friend.
